President Biden attends memorial service for Eddie Bernice Johnson in Dallas

Dallas, Texas – Dallas hosted the first of several memorials for ex-Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson on Monday.

President Joe Biden traveled to Dallas on Monday for a prayer service honoring Johnson that evening.

Johnson passed away on New Year’s Eve, aged 89.

She made history as the first African American and first female member of the Texas State Senate since Reconstruction.

Johnson’s political journey began in the Texas House. She was the first Black woman elected to office from Dallas and later served in the Texas Senate.

During her time in the U.S. Congress, Johnson concluded her career as the head of the House Science Committee. She was present at the White House when President Biden signed the CHIPS and Science Act in 2022, a law providing funds for the semiconductor industry.

Johnson stepped down from Congress one year ago, after 30 years of representing a North Texas district.

At Concord Church in Dallas, President Biden participated in a prayer event for Johnson.
