Thousands of inspections reveal Kansas City’s strongest food safety performers

Date:

Kansas City, Missouri – A clean kitchen is usually invisible to the customer. Plates arrive, orders move, and meals are served without anyone seeing the careful routines behind the counter. In Kansas City, 639 food establishments are now being recognized for getting those details right.

The Kansas City Health Department has named the recipients of its 2026 Food Safety Excellence Award, an annual honor reserved for businesses and institutions that demonstrated a strong record of cleanliness, safe food handling and public health protection during the previous year.

To qualify, establishments had to successfully pass rigorous health inspections throughout 2025 and meet or exceed standards in the Kansas City Food Code. The award remains valid for one year, recognizing recipients that maintained high safety expectations over time rather than during a single inspection.

This year’s winners represent 17% of the city’s 3,730 permitted food service establishments. That share is two percentage points higher than in 2025, showing that a larger portion of Kansas City’s food operators reached the department’s award level.

The list extends well beyond traditional restaurants. Bakeries, schools, hospitals and other locations that prepare or serve food were also among those honored. Together, the 639 recipients reflect the wide range of places where residents, workers, students, patients and visitors depend on safe meals every day.

“Behind every Food Safety Excellence Award is a shared commitment to public health,” Kansas City Health Department Director Dr. Marvia Jones said.

“We applaud the businesses that consistently meet these high standards and the Health Department inspectors who conduct thousands of inspections each year to help ensure food served in Kansas City is safe for everyone.”

That work continues throughout the year. The Health Department conducts more than 10,000 inspections annually across Kansas City, reviewing food practices and helping establishments understand and follow safety requirements. Those inspections form a major part of the city’s effort to reduce risks connected to food handling and protect the public.

For the award recipients, the recognition highlights a full year of steady work—cleaning equipment, storing ingredients properly, monitoring temperatures and following established food safety rules. Much of that effort happens away from public view, but its impact reaches every table.

The 2026 awards also provide a broader measure of progress. With 17% of permitted establishments receiving recognition, compared with 15% the previous year, Kansas City saw an increase in businesses meeting the program’s standards. As inspections continue throughout 2026, the next group of potential award winners is already being evaluated.
