Missouri – Missouri’s next snowstorm may still be months away, but the state is already looking for the people who will keep traffic moving when winter weather arrives.
The Missouri Department of Transportation is hiring hundreds of maintenance workers and emergency maintenance equipment operators across the state, offering jobs that begin with snow removal but can continue well beyond the winter season.
The openings are aimed at service-minded applicants who want steady work maintaining Missouri’s highway system. During colder months, crews are responsible for responding to snow and ice. At other times of the year, employees may handle mowing, pavement striping and a range of other maintenance duties.
“Missouri travelers depend on us throughout the year to maintain our highway system, especially once the snow starts to fall,” MoDOT State Maintenance Director Darin Hamelink said.

Starting pay is $20 per hour, although wages may vary based on experience and the area where an employee works. Entry- and intermediate-level workers may also qualify for a pay increase after completing one year in their position.
For applicants looking for more than seasonal work, MoDOT is promoting the jobs as a possible path into year-round public service. Full-time maintenance employees receive training, paid leave, medical, dental and vision insurance, and access to a retirement plan. The department also says the workplace is focused on safety, personal development and a diverse workforce.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and must pass a criminal background check. MoDOT noted that a misdemeanor or felony conviction does not automatically prevent someone from being hired, allowing candidates to be considered based on the full circumstances of their application.
A commercial driver’s license permit is preferred, but it is not required at the time of application. The department offers assistance and training to help new employees work toward obtaining a CDL, an important qualification for operating larger maintenance vehicles and winter equipment.

The hiring push comes before the first major winter weather event, giving MoDOT time to train new workers and prepare crews before road conditions become more demanding.
