If you drive U.S. 50 in Jackson County, MoDOT wants to hear what frustrates you before changes are chosen

Date:

Kansas City, Missouri – For drivers who regularly travel U.S. Route 50 through eastern Jackson County, the stretch between MO 7 and MO AA is about to get a closer look.

State transportation officials are asking the people who use the corridor every day to help identify where safety and traffic operations could be improved.

The Missouri Department of Transportation Kansas City will hold a public meeting Wednesday, Nov. 4, focused on potential changes along U.S. 50 near Lake Lotawana and Lone Jack.

The meeting comes as MoDOT evaluates several possible safety measures that could shape future projects along the highway.

The open house will run from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Lone Jack High School Cafeteria, 313 S. Bynum Road in Lone Jack. Residents, businesses, commercial drivers and other interested members of the public are invited to attend.

There will be no formal presentation. Instead, participants will be able to review displays and exhibits, ask questions, point out trouble spots and provide comments about the U.S. 50 corridor.

MoDOT is considering a range of potential improvements between MO 7 and MO AA. Among the options being evaluated are J-turn intersections, extensions of outer roads, turn lanes and other corridor safety enhancements.

No final set of improvements has been announced. The purpose of the Nov. 4 meeting is to gather information that can help MoDOT determine what changes could be appropriate for a future project or multiple projects in the area.

Public comments and project information will also be available through the U.S. Route 50 Safety and Operational Improvements in Jackson County project webpage. MoDOT said the public will continue receiving updates as planning moves forward.

The agency is not starting from scratch. MoDOT has previously studied and constructed J-turn improvements at locations along U.S. 50 and is using information from those earlier studies, along with current evaluations, to identify other areas where improvements may be warranted.

The Jackson County meeting is also part of a broader look at the rural U.S. 50 corridor. Additional public involvement opportunities are planned during November 2026 for areas around Warrensburg, Knob Noster, La Monte and Sedalia.

Those open houses will similarly seek feedback about future safety and operational improvements. MoDOT said more details about those events will be released in the coming weeks.

People who need reasonable accommodations or translation services for the Lone Jack meeting should contact MoDOT Kansas City District Communications at [email protected] by Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Those who cannot attend the meeting or access the project information online can request project materials from MoDOT’s district office at 600 NE Colbern Road in Lee’s Summit. Requests can also be directed to MoDOT Area Representative Doneisha Wigfall at [email protected].

As planning continues, MoDOT is emphasizing that public comments will play a role in evaluating where changes may be needed along the highway.

That gives people who drive the route regularly an opportunity to bring everyday concerns directly into the discussion before future improvements are selected.

MoDOT is also reminding motorists to slow down and remain alert in work zones. The agency notes that work zones can take many forms, including brief or temporary lane closures used for quick repairs or debris removal.
