Kansas City invests in Westport’s future with stormwater improvements and public space enhancements

Date:

Kansas City, Missouri – Kansas City has formally started a major project meant to address the ongoing problem of flash flooding in the historic Westport area. Led by KC Water in partnership with Burns & McDonnell and other important partners, the Westport Stormwater Improvements Project started with a groundbreaking ceremony earlier today.

Aiming particularly at the regular flash floods that have affected the area, this essential infrastructure project is meant to strengthen the resilience of the population against severe weather conditions. It brings two significant breakthroughs: substantial underground stormwater storage systems able to retain excess water during severe rain.

Strategically placed, these facilities include one under Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park and one under the Sun Fresh Market parking lot. These basins aim to relieve the strain on the district’s old sewer lines, which are usually overrun during storm events, by temporarily storing excess rainfall.

“The Westport Stormwater Improvements Project addresses a pressing need in one of Kansas City’s most treasured districts. Westport is a vital economic and entertainment hub for our city. Investing in Westport stormwater infrastructure improvements make us safer, protects local businesses, enhances public spaces, and ensures Westport remains a prime destination for future generations” said Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas.

Apart from the flood reduction strategies, the project will change Mill Street by adding green infrastructure. Not only will this help to effectively manage water, but it will also enhance the practical and aesthetic qualities of the street, hence improving its accessibility and pedestrian-friendliness.

Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park will be improved as part of the landscape improvements to include a new pedestrian route improving connection to the busy Westport entertainment area. The park will also have more public areas, better access features, and native tree plantings added; plans for future improvements will guide these changes.

The construction timeline is structured to minimize disruptions to the community:

  • Spring 2025: Initial groundwork will commence at Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park.
  • Summer 2025: The focus will shift to Mill Street with extensive renovations.
  • Spring 2026: Activities will be temporarily halted to accommodate the FIFA World Cup events.
  • Late 2026: The entire project is expected to wrap up.

Traffic and neighborhood disturbances will be managed during the building stages. Work will run from Mill Street to Southwest Trafficway for residents and visitors, with extra improvements along Westport Road, 40th Street, Waddell Avenue, and inside Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park itself. Updates and more information are being offered on KC Water’s website.

Those with construction-related questions are encouraged to contact the project hotline or call (816) 513-9450.
