Kansas City to distribute 1,000 free trees this fall as part of Canopy Cover KC initiative, commitment to environmental sustainability

Date:

Kansas City, Missouri – With another Canopy Cover KC project, delivering 1,000 trees this fall at no cost to citizens, Kansas City is upholding its dedication to urban greening. Supported by collaborations with the Arbor Day Foundation and Bridging the Gap, this project seeks to increase the city’s tree canopy in line with a larger objective of 10,000 trees by the summer of 2026.

City Manager Brian Platt emphasized the initiative’s significance in a recent statement.

“Our Canopy Cover KC initiative is a vital step in our journey toward making Kansas City the greenest city in the United States,” said City Manager Brian Platt. “By planting 10,000 trees by Summer 2026, we are not only enhancing the beauty of our city but also taking crucial steps to improve air quality, reduce urban heat, and create a healthier environment for our residents. Together with our partners, we are committed to building a greener, more sustainable future for Kansas City.”

With nearly 5,500 trees planted to date, the campaign is already significantly headed toward its goal. These trees are part of a more comprehensive plan to improve the visual appeal and environmental quality of Kansas City neighborhoods.

Those who want to take part in the fall tree giveaway have to reserve their trees through the city’s special website ahead of time. Every property qualifies to get up to two trees, therefore guaranteeing extensive program access. Among the native and climate-adapted tree species on hand are Sugar Maple, Kentucky Coffeetree, Black Tupelo (Black Gum), Shumard Oak, Sycamore, American Hornbeam, Redbud, Yellowwood, and Downy Serviceberry.

Though home drop-off options are available for households in a few zip codes, distribution will mostly take place through in-person pickup events, hence improving the accessibility of the effort.

Residents interested to take part of this greening project should visit the Canopy Cover KC feature on kcmo.gov/freetrees on the city website. On the website, consumers can arrange a pick-up date, reserve a tree and select their desired species. The city also invites citizens to check out the tree planting dashboard, which highlights the favorable effects of the continuous initiatives to increase Kansas City’s tree canopy on the surroundings.
