Kansas City unveils strategic transit plan with FIFA-branded bus fleet for 2026

Date:

Kansas City, Missouri – Kansas City has advanced significantly in its readiness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by securing a fleet of 200 buses as it gets ready to host the event. By positioning Kansas City as the first of the 16 host cities to complete these preparations, this action sets a proactive model in handling the significant transportation needs anticipated for the event.

The fleet, leased through a collaborative effort involving both the states of Kansas and Missouri, as well as the city of Kansas City, Missouri, will serve an estimated 650,000 visitors. These buses are meant to complement the current public transport system, therefore improving connectivity throughout the city. From the games, the FIFA Fan Festival, Kansas City International Airport, hotel hubs, and other popular attractions across the city, visitors and residents will have access to transportation options connecting them to different key destinations.

“Kansas City’s regional collaboration has established a strong foundation for the FIFA World Cup 26™ Kansas City,” said Amy Hopfinger, Chief Business and Strategy Officer, FIFA World Cup 2026. “We applaud KC2026’s forward thinking and ability to work together on transportation across state lines in their ongoing effort to welcome the world in 2026.”

Apart from covering the buses, the lease agreement addresses drivers, fuel, maintenance, and other logistical requirements to guarantee a flawless and safe travel experience. Each bus will feature distinctive FIFA World Cup 26 branding, and there remains the possibility of acquiring additional buses as tournament planning progresses.

This transportation approach is a component of a larger multimodal transportation plan necessary for managing visitor influx and preserving daily city life. It looks to combine several forms of transportation, including the current KC Streetcar system, a park-and- ride system, and more bike and walking routes.

City authorities intend to interact constantly with stakeholders, local planning organizations, transportation providers, law enforcement, and surrounding towns as the event approaches. This cooperative strategy seeks to improve the transit experience, thereby allowing both locals and guests to enjoy the event with least disturbance to normal operations.
