Missouri pays tribute to fallen soldier with statewide flag-lowering order on Sunday

Date:

Missouri – In a tribute to a fallen hero, Governor Mike Kehoe has announced that U.S. and Missouri flags would be flown at half-staff across all Macon County government facilities this Sunday. Issued in honor of United States Army Staff Sergeant Shelbe Faye Butner, the order follows her unexpected death on January 30, 2025, during a training exercise at Fort Stewart in Georgia.

“Staff Sergeant Shelbe Faye Butner was dedicated to serving our country with honor, courage, and unwavering commitment,” said Governor Mike Kehoe. “Staff Sergeant Butner considered the welfare of others a personal responsibility and was guided by her love of country to serve our nation. Her sacrifice reminds us of the bravery and dedication of the men and women who put themselves in harm’s way to protect our freedoms. Claudia and I join Shelbe’s family and friends in honoring her service and mourning her loss.”

Native of Macon and 2015 Macon High School graduate Shelbe Faye Butner started her military service on June 1, 2015. She soon set herself out as a committed Army motor transport operator with the Military Occupational Specialty Code 88M. Rigorous training and outstanding performance defined her career; she graduated from Drill Sergeant School, Air Assault School, and Army Basic Leader Course. Having been promoted to Staff Sergeant on August 1, 2022, Staff Sergeant Butner was serving in the 6th Squadron – 8th Cavalry Regiment at the time of her death.

Staff Sergeant Butner’s excellent performance was noted with many honors during her almost ten-year service. Among other honors are the Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal. Her career also featured a noteworthy trip to Kuwait, therefore highlighting her dedication to world peace and security.

Macon, where Butner grew up and subsequently graduated from high school, feels an immense loss. Shelbe was not only a soldier but a cherished member of the community. The sentiments and stories the residents tell about her dedication and love of the nation will carry on her bravery and selflessness.

The governor’s order ensures that flags will be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on the day of her interment, allowing the state and her community to pay their respects. The gesture serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families.
