Voter roll cleanup uncovers thousands of deceased and ineligible registrants in Missouri

Date:

Missouri – More than 200,000 names have been deleted from Missouri’s voter registration lists in 2025. This is part of an ongoing effort to keep records correct and protect against potential fraud. Secretary of State Denny Hoskins disclosed the numbers. He said that the removals were based on checks that were done in coordination with local election officials and federal agencies.

Hoskins said that the process found a number of types of voters who were not qualified. More than 18,000 people were proven dead, and more than 2,000 were people who had been convicted of felonies and had not yet gotten their voting privileges back. Some of them were not U.S. citizens or residents who had relocated out of Missouri without deleting their state registration.

The study found multiple instances that had direct legal ramifications in some cases. Hoskins used the example of an undocumented immigrant who voted in the general election in November 2024. Officials stated that person is currently going through the process of being deported.

The secretary of state said that many removals were just part of normal changes in residency. Voters who move to other states generally stay on Missouri’s books unless they explicitly revoke their registration. This can lead to people registering to vote in more than one state. Hoskins added that by getting rid of old records, Missouri lowers the chance that the same person will vote in more than one jurisdiction during the same election cycle.

Before making any modifications, local election officials worked closely with the secretary of state’s office to make sure the information was correct. They also used federal immigration databases and other systems for registering voters across state lines to check eligibility.

Hoskins said that the attempt was part of a larger effort to make elections more transparent. Keeping clean and accurate voter rolls is important for people to trust the elections. The adjustments come before future municipal and statewide elections. Officials expect that the shorter lists will help make voting go more smoothly and safely.

The removals are only a small part of the state’s total registered voters, but election officials say that the cleansing process will be a regular part of Missouri’s election preparation from now on.
