Kansas City, Missouri – Kansas City police have identified the man killed in a weekend shooting as 21-year-old Jalen S. Gilliam, as detectives continue working to piece together what led to the deadly gunfire.
Officers were dispatched shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday to the 1300 block of East 76th Street on a report of shots fired, according to information released by the Kansas City Police Department. When patrol units reached the area near 76th Street and Lydia Avenue, they found two adult men inside a vehicle, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
Gilliam was critically injured. Officers immediately began performing lifesaving measures at the scene while requesting emergency medical services. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The second man, also struck by gunfire, sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening.
As investigators began canvassing the area, they identified a possible subject of interest believed to be connected to the shooting. Police surrounded a nearby residence and initiated what is known as an “Operation 100,” a tactical standoff procedure used in high-risk situations. Negotiators and specialized tactical officers responded, working to resolve the situation safely. After clearing the residence, authorities determined that no one was inside.
