Missouri road officials prepare for heavy Kansas City World Cup travel

Date:

Kansas City, Missouri – Kansas City is getting ready for one of the biggest moments in its history, and Missouri transportation officials are already warning that the celebration will come with a serious challenge on the roads.

As the city prepares to host FIFA World Cup events, the Missouri Department of Transportation is urging drivers, businesses and freight operators to think ahead. Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to move through Missouri during the tournament, with the heaviest pressure likely in and around Kansas City. Still, MoDOT says the impact may not stop there. Roads across the state could see more traffic than usual as fans travel between hotels, venues, fan events and other destinations.

MoDOT says it is working to keep traffic moving during the busy stretch. In the Kansas City region, nearly all state roadwork will be moved off the roadway during the tournament so major routes can carry as much traffic as possible. Operations centers will also be staffed during event periods to help coordinate travel messages and provide updated information to drivers.

“This is a proud moment for Missouri, and it takes all of us working together to keep our roads safe,” said MoDOT Director Ed Hassinger. “By planning ahead and staying alert to changing conditions, drivers can help ensure a smooth World Cup experience. When it comes to travel, a little teamwork goes a long way. That’s how we’ll celebrate a successful tournament for Missouri residents and visitors alike.”

Freight traffic is also part of the warning. MoDOT is encouraging freight operators to consider alternate routes around Kansas City during the busiest travel windows. Officials say shifting some travel away from the most crowded areas could help reduce delays for everyone.

Employers may also play a role. Around match days and other major events, MoDOT is encouraging local businesses to adjust schedules when possible. Even small changes in commuting patterns could help ease congestion during peak travel periods.

Rail travel is expected to be busier as well. Additional capacity will be available on the Missouri River Runner between June 14 and July 12 to help meet higher demand for tickets.

For fans going to matches or the official fan festival, the ConnectKC26 transportation plan will provide guidance on parking hubs and dedicated bus routes. Complete details and updates are available at https://kansascityfwc26.com/ .

MoDOT’s message is simple: the World Cup will bring excitement, visitors and pride to Missouri, but smooth travel will depend on planning early, staying alert and working together.
