City services delayed, school closures: Winter weather causes lots of problems in Kansas City

Date:

Kansas City, Mo. – Garbage collection in Kansas City has been pushed back by a day due to extremely cold weather.

Now, trash that was supposed to be collected on Tuesday will be picked up on Wednesday, the city has stated. For those whose trash day was Monday, the new pick-up date is January 22nd. This change is because there was no trash service on Martin Luther King Day.

The reason for postponing trash services is to keep workers safe from the severe cold. Currently, there’s a warning for wind chill in the Kansas City area until Tuesday noon. The wind chill might reach 30 degrees below zero, says the National Weather Service.

City Hall will be closed on Tuesday due to these weather conditions, although the Municipal Court will be open.

The Kansas City Aviation Department has advised travelers to stay updated on their flight’s status. They can do this through FlyKC.com or their airline’s website, as snowfall continues in the area.

School closures and virtual learning in Kansas City

Many public schools in the Kansas City area have decided to either cancel classes or switch to online learning for Tuesday. This decision is due to the extreme cold, snow, and poor road conditions.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe wind chill warning effective until Tuesday noon. Monday night’s temperatures could feel as cold as 40 degrees below zero with the wind chill considered.

Different school districts in the metro area are taking various approaches to using remote learning.

Kansas City Public Schools, Blue Springs School District, Park Hill Schools, and North Kansas City Schools will conduct classes online. On the other hand, Independence School District and Blue Valley Schools have declared a snow day and canceled classes.
