Kansas City aims to enhance the Country Club Plaza District with innovative mixed-use redevelopment projects

Date:

Kansas City, Missouri – Kansas City has officially opened the floor for proposals to revitalize the historic Plaza Tennis Courts, located in the Country Club Plaza District. Announced on September 10, this call for redevelopment plans represents a major step towards improving the facilities and community spaces of the area.

Kansas City wants the area to be a mixed-use development that complements the famous legacy of the Plaza. This project is a component of a larger effort covering the completion of the KC Streetcar extension and the most recent purchase of Country Club Plaza buildings.

Interested developers are encouraged to suggest designs including residential multi-family buildings with a section set aside for income-restricted affordable housing. In addition, part of the reconstruction includes moving the current tennis courts to a new location. The city emphasizes the need of transit-oriented, high-density development that uses the nearby streetcar station to reduce the demand for parking.

Ground-floor retail stores, public areas, and other facilities finalized depending on local community comments should also be part of the proposals. The city also seeks design ideas reflecting the Plaza’s historical architectural character and featuring walkable areas, strong community involvement, and secure pedestrian crossings.

With the city planning significant conversations with community leaders, stakeholders, and the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners, the rebuilding process is intended to be rather interactive. Before any project advances, Parks Board, City Council, and maybe public ballot measure approval will be needed to guarantee that the voice of the community is heard and included into the final plan.

By the deadline of 11:59 PM on November 1, 2024, developers interested in participation can send their proposals using Bonfire, the official online platform for RFPs and bids. The proposal site of the city provides the required documentation and submission details, so guaranteeing a straightforward and transparent procedure for all the interested parties.
