Kansas City-area drivers warned of months-long lane and ramp closures near I-29 and U.S. 169

Date:

Kansas City, Missouri – Drivers in Clay County should be ready for a number of lane and ramp closures at the intersection of Interstate 29 and U.S. 169 as a big project to fix and replace a bridge moves forward. The Missouri Department of Transportation has set a start date for the work in mid-February. Weather permitting, traffic will be affected until late spring.

The first closures will happen during the weekend of Friday, February 13, starting at 7 p.m. and ending early Monday morning at 5 a.m. During this time, the split on northbound U.S. 169 that leads to the ramp for northbound I-29 will be closed. Also, the ramp from southbound I-29 to northbound U.S. 169 will be closed. Drivers going north on U.S. 169 will be directed to take I-29 or U.S. 69 instead.

Long-term modifications to traffic will start at 5 a.m. on February 13 and last until May 19. During this time, northbound I-29 will be closed at U.S. 169. Traffic going north will have to take a detour onto U.S. 169 and then Missouri Route 152 going west. During this time, a number of ramps from U.S. 69 to I-29 going north and south will also be closed.

Throughout the duration of the project, both northbound I-29 and northbound U.S. 169 will be reduced to a single lane at the interchange. MoDOT says these restrictions are necessary to safely complete rehabilitation and replacement work on the I-29 bridges spanning U.S. 169 in both directions.

During engagement events in September 2025, the public learned about the bridge improvements as part of a wider infrastructure project. Drivers should slow down, be aware, and look out for changing conditions when driving through the work zone. Lane closures and traffic patterns may change as construction goes on.
