Kansas City opens doors to new life for empty storefronts with creative revitalization push

Date:

Kansas City, Missouri – Kansas City has officially launched applications for the Open Doors! Program, a creative project that aims to turn empty storefronts into dynamic places full of art, business, and community energy. The Storefront Vacancy Revitalization Program was the name of the program prior to this. It is part of the city’s larger goal to get more people to shop locally and get ready for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The major purpose of the initiative is to connect property owners in downtown with small businesses, artists, and local groups that are eager to make their ideas come to life through temporary exhibitions and pop-up stores. Kansas City wants to both improve the look of its downtown and boost the economy in critical sections along the streetcar route and other busy neighborhoods by filling empty commercial buildings.

Applications officially opened on Tuesday, October 14. Property owners and enterprises were the two main groups that could apply. Property owners in downtown Kansas City with empty storefronts are being encouraged to apply and work with potential tenants who want to bring new ideas into their locations. Small company owners, artists, and community groups having a track record of making sales or running a business can also apply. They will need to open their pop-up shops at least four days a week during the World Cup.

City officials emphasize that Open Doors! is more than just a short-term beautifying initiative; it’s also an investment in the long-term health of Kansas City.

“Open Doors! will enhance our city’s neighborhoods for the World Cup and long after,” said Councilman Wes Rogers. “By incentivizing our property owners and small businesses to revitalize our storefronts, we will build stronger, safer neighborhoods, and in doing so, we will also increase our tax base.”

The initiative will be run and overseen by the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City (EDCKC). EDCKC has a history of helping local businesses get started. For example, they worked with KC BizCare on the successful Back to Business initiative.

“This program is built for Kansas City makers, artists, and small businesses who are ready to grow,” said Tracey Lewis, President and CEO of EDCKC. “By pairing them with property owners and removing barriers, Open Doors! turns ideas into real storefronts that create jobs and visibility. The goal is simple: give local talent a stage.”
