Kansas City, Missouri – Kansas City has launched a community-driven project called “Snow Angels” as winter draws near to help citizens with mobility issues do the difficult chore of snow removal. This program aims to harness the spirit of community and volunteerism by matching able-bodied volunteers with seniors and disabled residents to clear snow from driveways and sidewalks.
Those at least 18 years old, in good physical condition, and with access to a snow shovel are sought for volunteers under the “Snow Angels” program. Helping to ensure that sidewalks, driveways, and access points are free of snow and ice helps volunteers to make it safer for those with restricted mobility to navigate during the snowy months.
Over the next three weeks, everyone who would want help from the “Snow Angels” can register online. The initiative is proximity-based, meaning volunteers are matched with neighbors to streamline logistics and promote a feeling of community. Matching neighbors can call their designated Snow Angel to arrange for snow removal when at least two inches of snowfall build up.
The Snow Angels page on the city’s website lets prospective volunteers and citizens in need register for the program. Once enrolled, volunteers will be connected with a resident quite easily. The program administrators stress that Snow Angels program is a volunteer effort so they do not accept any kind of money. This requirement emphasizes the program’s philosophy as a compassionate deed of community service.
Kansas City officials are enthusiastic about the positive impact the “Snow Angels” program will have on the community. It’s more than just removing snow; it’s neighbors helping neighbors. The program is about making winter a little easier and a lot safer for those who find it challenging to manage snow removal on their own.
When matched with a resident, volunteers will get an email alert together with further directions on how to proceed should snowfall meet the requirements of the program. Along with benefiting underprivileged neighbors, this program enhances community ties and promotes a culture of mutual respect and help among Kansas City’s citizens.
