Missouri promotes the ‘e-filing tool’ for faster refunds and improved tax return accuracy

Date:

Jefferson City, Missouri – Officially starting the 2024 tax season, the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) allows citizens to electronically submit their state tax returns. The DOR has provided some guidelines and tools to guarantee a seamless and quick procedure as Missourians get ready for tax filings.

Emphasizing its speed, accuracy, and security advantages over conventional paper filing, the DOR is pushing electronic filing. E-filing taxpayers should expect faster processing and, should they choose direct deposit, quicker refunds. This approach provides a simpler tax return experience by minimizing mistakes typical in hand calculations and data entry.

For those eligible, Missouri provides free e-filing services in association with the Free File Alliance. Under approved software, this program lets qualified taxpayers file both federal and state taxes at no expense. The online filing resource page of the Missouri DOR as well as the IRS Free File website provides more details.

Paper filing is still a possibility even with the push for digital. The DOR advises those using this method to double-check their returns for accuracy. Important checks include validating signatures, ensuring correct math, and collecting all necessary paperwork. Whether they owe balances or are due refunds, taxpayers should use the correct postal addresses for filings.

Those Missouri taxpayers qualified for tax credits should not ignore Form MO-TC, necessary to apply different credits. This form, along with necessary documentation such as schedules and certifications, should be attached to the filed returns. The DOR’s website provides comprehensive instructions and extra material on several tax credits.

Covering portion of the real estate taxes or rent paid inside the tax year, the Missouri Property Tax Credit Claim primarily benefits qualified seniors and completely disabled people. This year, qualified taxpayers may also submit this claim online for further convenience.

For those with simple tax circumstances, such as single filers with W-2 income who do not itemize deductions, Missouri has developed improved online services. These users can access the filing system directly through the DOR’s website.

Additional tools from the DOR include a Tax Return Status Tracker, which offers updates via text and email, and a virtual assistant named DORA, available 24/7 to answer tax-related inquiries. For assistance with their income tax or other DOR services, taxpayers can also send email.

The DOR supports those seeking more assistance in using community resources including the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, the MU Extension Taxpayer Education Initiative, or the IRS Free Tax Return Preparation.
