Missouri study highlights four-day school week as key factor for attracting teachers in Independence

Date:

Missouri – The Independence School District, the biggest in the state to implement a four-day school week, experienced an amazing rise in job applications. Following the reduced school week in 2023, applications soared by 360% according a recent Missouri State University study.

Taken under the supervision of Jon Turner of Missouri State University, the study focused on the reasons underlying this notable surge of applicants. Of the teachers applying to the district, 63% mentioned the four-day school week as one of their top three reasons for applying; 27% of candidates ranked it as their first priority.

Superintendent Dale Herl of the Independence School District emphasized the good effects of this legislative amendment on teacher retention and recruitment rates. According to Herl, in a competitive market, the four-day school week has become increasingly important in drawing and keeping top-notch teachers.

Although the change to a shortened school week was first met with skepticism the clear advantages seen in Independence could inspire other districts, especially given continuous difficulties with teacher retention. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education of Missouri notes that only roughly half of the first-year teachers remain in their positions until their sixth year, which emphasizes the need of creative ideas to maintain the teaching staff.

The results of the study imply that in rural areas, where recruiting and retention issues are common, the four-day strategy could be particularly appealing.

“If the four-day week is attractive, as our research from Independence says it is and other research we’ve done around the state in rural settings say this four-day week is attractive, there may be people in Jefferson City that want to push back against it, but they’re not those local school boards and local board leaders that are trying to fill these positions,” Turner told Missourinet.
