Streetcar mass casualty simulation set for May 2 to boost Kansas City’s emergency readiness

Date:

Kansas City, Missouri – Kansas City will see a thorough emergency response exercise at the future site of the Plaza Streetcar Station, near the intersection of Main Street and W 47th Street, on May 2, 2025. Part of a Kansas City Public Works project with several local agencies, the drill—set to begin at 10:00 AM and run until noon—is meant to guarantee readiness and efficient interagency cooperation for any potential streetcar-related emergencies.

The exercise is intended to imitate a mass casualty event involving a streetcar, therefore enabling emergency responders to practice evacuation procedures, medical triage, and extrication of volunteer “passengers.” Participating in this important drill are the Kansas City Streetcar Authority, Herzog Transit Services, Inc., Benesch, the Kansas City Fire Department, the Kansas City Police Department, and RAPT Readiness Media, together with K&J Safety and Security Consulting Services, Inc.

Beginning at 7:00 AM, residents and commuters should anticipate significant activity in the area as Main Street between W 47th Street and Ward Parkway will be blocked from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM to support the exercise. Advance signs will be put to notify drivers and walkers about the road closures and direct them accordingly.

As the Streetcar system is set to expand across the Main Street, this exercise emphasizes the city’s dedication to safety and preparedness. Such exercises are essential for evaluating and improving the response plans of the city as well as for strengthening interagency cooperation.

All registered attendees will get more information from Kansas City Public Works, including parking directions.
